question 'bout Filth's live shows...

Anyone know if they ever play more than an hour? I saw 'em in Portland a while ago, and the set seemed kinda short. I understand that playing balls-to-the-wall may drain the energy levels pretty quickly, but I'm just curious if they go longer on occasion.

That show was particularly amusing, in that there were quite a handful of 10-13 year old kids. Seemed a lot had *no* fucking idea what they were getting into; you could tell by their faces once Filth started up... :)

COF: Ask The Artist

(he has since left the group, but, before his departure, COF Bassist Dave Pybus answered questions submitted by fans at the record label website)

Ask your questions to Dave Pybus!

Past ask the artists from Cradle of Filth >>

Question:
Explain how a severed pig's head ended up in your producer's bed? The Guru (Mike Gitter)

Answer:
The truth. Our studio engineer Dan Turner has a great sense of humor and was involved in a little war with Producer Rob Caggiano. So, as to retaliate to something Rob had done earlier, Dan went out and bought a real pigs head just to get him back. Kinda stank the whole place out for a day.

Question:
Dave, I saw you live in Camden, London and you blew the fucking roof off, amazing! I was wondering what the white writing said on one of your basses? (James)

Answer:
It was a small sticker I acquired from Ozzfest that said 'Eat More Dick'. Not really intended to be a hint for guys in the band though haha.

Question:
Growing up, who were your main influences in music? (Luke)

Answer:
My Father was resposible for my introduction to music in the mid '70's. He liked all the classic stuff, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, The Who, Led Zepplin, T-Rex, Free and Black Sabbath. He also played Jeff Waynes 'War of the Worlds' a lot which scared the hell out of me. He later took me to a few shows and got me into AC/DC, who we saw in 1982 (not my first show). I then got into Metallica around 1985, saw them live with Cliff Burton in 1986, just 2 weeks before Cliff was killed. That was a great honour and had a profound effect on me. There wasn't many people at the show I remember. Iron Maiden and Venom were also fave bands of mine. When I was 18 I started getting into more underground bands and branching out into things like movie soundtracks.

Question:
Hey Dave, I saw you guys at Donington this year and it was amazing, I was just wondering how many of the new tracks you will play live, have the band decided yet? (Cozzy)

Answer:
When the full touring starts for NYMPHETAMINE we will probably get to play 4-5 songs off the record. Obviously 'Gilded Cunt' and 'Nemesis' will open the set. As for the other songs, I'm not sure of yet as we can play just about all of them live. Pretty good situation to be in for once.

Question:
My boyfriend and I are huge COF fans. We desperately want see you. When do you think your next UK gigs will be? (Clare)

Answer:
The European tour for this new record is looking like February/March 2005 and there will be dates for the UK included in that. I'm not sure of the cities we will play exactly but I'd hope to think it's not just going to be London. Our UK fans deserve a bit more than just one show.

Question:
How do you feel about replacing Robin Graves? (David)

Answer:
Well, at first I was just session bass guitarist for Cradle, which lasted near 10 months and two major tours, so I wasn't sure what was gonna happen with my future with the band. When Robin decided to leave he helped me out to learn all the parts and that was quite interesting 'cos he played the bass differently to me. We found it funny. Where he played high on the fret board I played low, and when he played low I learned the parts high. We thought that was funny. His style is totally different to mine. I'm a purist when it comes to line-ups and Robin was like an original member. But there was nothing I could do to make him stay so... I just stuck around and ended up joining the band full time.

Question:
How sick are you of being asked questions like is their a rivalry between you guys and Dimmu Borgir? (Aaron)

Answer:
It does get a little annoying to say there isn't much of a rivalry anyways. When people make remarks in the press it gets blown out of preportion so we don't really take whats printed as 'truth'. We know the Dimmu guys and wish them good luck with everything they do.

Question:
Is Cradle going to release a new DVD like 'Heavy Left-Handed & Candid'? Did you shoot any footage of the Nymphetamine studio sessions? (Sami)

Answer:
Well, yeah, we got tons of footage from the last 3 years and hopefully we will all get chance to sit and watch through most of the good parts and edit it down to something worth putting out. There's always a lot of stupid behind the scenes footage and things you'd like to forget but for some reason thats what people want to see when they buy a DVD so... god knows what will come out of it. The DVD should maybe be released next year and will include a live show too.

Question:
What was it like playing `Download` the biggest rock festival in the UK? (Jack)

Answer:
Download was brilliant this year for us. We thought someone didn't really like us by putting us on the saturdays bill with all the softer bands. It actually worked to our advantage mainly because it made us stand out a lot more. When we walked out onstage there was like 10,000 fans chaning 'Cradle, Cradle!' which was pretty moving. I mean, we get a lot of negativity in the U.K. and that just made it all not matter. The real thing is between us and the fans, the rest is bollox I guess.

Question:
How did you get into Cradle? Did someone contact you, or did you contact them? (Stephen)

Answer:
I was working with Orange Goblin on tour with Alice Cooper as their guitar tech when, one night we were in Manchester, I got a text message from Martin Powell (Keyboards) saying 'Do you want a job?' I called him a few days after and came down for a try out, like and audition, but with no one else there. I mean, no other bass players. The CoF guys just said 'hey, you need to do this for us 'cos we don't know anyone else who can do it at such short notice'. I had three weeks to learn 14 songs and then my first show was in Seattle, USA, on the Bitter suites tour, 2001. It's been crazy ever since.

Question:
Hi! Why did you leave Anathema after such a good album (Judgement)? What was the reason? (Sosna)

Answer:
I left after the record that followed 'Judgement', called 'A fine day to Exit', in June 2001. I'd had enough of the situation I was in and decided to just stop taking about it and actually do something about it. It was a perfectly simple selfish move on my part. No one else really cared what I wanted at the time so I just moved on.

Question:
Hey before I ask you my question, I'd just like to say that the 4th June is my birthday too!!! Good to have celebrity birthday in my opinion!! I just wanted to know what is your favourite Cradle album that you didn't play on? (Jonathan)

Answer:
I'd have to say 'MIDIAN'. I just like the overall sound and songs on that record. Cool we got the same birthday too.

Question:
What are your 3 favourite horror movies? Simple question, but I'm interested in. Thanx! (Norman)

Answer:
'The Thing', 'Jaws', and I guess 'Halloween'. All pretty dated now I guess. Not really into the modern style horror movies.

Question:
Do you appreciate the work all the street teamers do? Or don't you really care about it? (Amy)

Answer:
Of course I appreciate their work. I actually want Roadrunner to organize a day where I can get to meet our street team and personally thank them. I always loved the idea of enthusiastic people wanting to help bands out. I think that is very important to get passionate people involved.

Question:
I've only just got into Gothic Metal and I fucking love COF...what is your favourite song you have made and why? (Skinzi)

Answer:
We kind have made a lot of songs I like so it's difficult to pin point an actual track I'd favour over any other. We work pretty hard at all of them and so they are all a labour of hate haha.

Question:
Do you think your music influences other bands to write songs and albums? (Beth)

Answer:
Erm... I guess we do seeing as there are a few cover bands of Cradle. One we met up with in Chile recently. It was strange meeting someone who was supposed to be me in this cover band. None of them looked like us, as you can imagine, that was quite funny!

COF News: Bassist Dave Pybus leaves band

(ok...so this is old news, but, I'm sure someone will find it useful!)

A CRADLE WITHOUT PYBUS - 1.24.2005
Cradle of Filth sent the following message to the Roadrunner offices today:

We are sorry to say that as of yesterday (Thurs. 1/20), Dave Pybus is no longer with Cradle of Filth. Dave has decided, for personal reasons that he is unable to continue with the band. This will not endanger the tour dates we currently have in place or future recording commitments, as a replacement will be found to complete these.

We are all very sorry that Dave has made this decision and he will be missed.

Cradle of Filth will be releasing Nymphetamine: Special Edition on March 1, 2005 which will feature two all new tracks, covers of "Mr. Crowley", Bathory's "Bestial Lust" & "Devil Woman" with King Diamond, 2 previously unreleased tracks, all new & expanded artwork and the video for "Nymphetamine"

Headbangers Ball CD Vol 2, featuring CoF

Building on the success of the first Headbangers Ball record released in October 2003, MTV2 and Roadrunner Records will release a second of its kind - MTV2 Headbangers Ball, Volume 2 - on September 28th, 2004. Highlighting the best classic and current metal videos, interviews with hard rock artists, and showcasing a new breed of metal talent, the "Headbangers Ball" series is home for the millions of hard rock fans nationwide and has inspired the wildly successful compilation CD and tour. Hosted by Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed, MTV2's Headbangers Ball can be seen every Saturday night at 10pm ET/ 7pm PT.

As with the first installment, which was released in October of 2003, the MTV2 Headbangers Ball Volume 2 album will feature 40 tracks on 2 CDs - one disc of established acts, and one of up-and-coming street-level bands - for the cost of just one. Intent on presenting the width and breadth of the burgeoning hard rock scene, only 7 repeats from last year's volume, those 7 being artists with brand new material to contribute. The result is once again the ultimate document of hard rock circa 2004, showcasing credible, respected acts like Slipknot, HIM, Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God, Atreyu and Unearth among others. Also included are unreleased tracks from Probot, Trivium and Lamb of God, while Megadeth, Shadows Fall, Kittie, Dillinger Escape Plan, Cradle of Filth and 3 Inches Of Blood contribute tracks from their upcoming albums.

The track listing for the double-disc is as follows:
Disc 1:
1. Slipknot - "Duality"

CoF News: 8/11/04 "NYMPHETAMINE PRESCRIPTION "

A lot of Cradle Of Filth ground to cover with this update. First off, a couple of interviews the band did whilst here in the RR NY office last week have been posted online - click on the following links for Dani's interview with www.LOUDSIDE.com (http://www.loudside.com/interviews/?interview=10) and www.ALLTHINGSMETAL.net(http://www.allthingsmetal.net/bands/interviews/cradleoffilth.html).

AND, do read below for bassist Dave Pybus' answers to the questions you sent in (more answers to come later this week):

Question - Have you guys ever considered doing an all cover album of classic metal? Because I thought what you did with Iron Maiden's “Hallowed be Thy Name” was fuckin awesome, and it would be really interesting to see how you guys would do Black Sabbath's “Iron Man,” or Metallica's “Battery.” - Jim

Dave Pybus - The only time we ever talk about covers is when we are drunk playing the MISFITS on the tour bus. It's all just a dream really, a project like that, 'cos we are so damn busy all the time doing our own material. Maybe, one day, we will attempt the idea.
------------------------------------------------------------
Question - What kind of weird idea's does CoF have for there new video? I'm just curious. I can't wait to hear the new album it sounds like it's gonna be a killer one. – Dark Lotus

Dave Pybus - I've yet to read the treatment for the new video which we will film in London next week. Its gonna be the track “NYMPHETAMINE” and hopefully feature Liv Kristine, seen as she sang on the track.
------------------------------------------------------------
Question - When do you plan on going on tour for Nymphetamine? Are you planning on a world tour? If so, make it to Louisville, Kentucky. You have so many fans you don't know about. Plus, I have been trying to go to your concerts for a very long time and now that I can go to them, you're never around. I'm sorry to sound like I'm bitching, but I needed to tell you guys. Thank you so much! I'm looking forward to the new record! Hail Satan! - Andrea Hill

Dave Pybus - Well, the plan is, firstly to survive our South American tour in September…haha. Then hit the states in October/November after the new record is out. I'm not sure of the cities we are paying but obviously we try to get to as many people as possible. The tour is always longer than originally planned so maybe we will get closer to you than you think. Hope to see you at one of the other shows if not.
------------------------------------------------------------
Question - With the signing of you guys to Roadrunner Records, and with interest you have been getting from people since your Ozzfest '03 appearance (which I saw you guys fucking kicked ass), do you feel you have reached the prime of you careers with the new album Nymphetamine coming out? Or do you feel that you have not even reached what can be with CoF? (I know 2 part question) - Adam Suchara

Dave Pybus - Well to think we are in our prime would be a little self-defeating. There is always so much for us to do we don't get much time to spend thinking about that. At the moment, on the eve of NYMPHETAMINE being released, we are very positive about doing the NEXT record and making it better than anything we have ever done before. There is much evil to spread so lots of hard work still…haha.
------------------------------------------------------------
Question - Will the band tour in Australia? Particularly, in Perth?

Dave Pybus - We haven't played Australia for a few years and there is plans in the pipeline to get back there asap. It's looking like spring 2005 and as for the places we will play I'm not sure. I've personally never been there so I'm excited about getting a chance to get there to play.
------------------------------------------------------------
Question - Greetings all of Cradle Of Filth.
I would like to know as to the stances of your own personal views on religion. What do you feel about religion as a whole, what is your spiritual standpoint? What philosophers do you most agree towards? - Rayne Gaccione

Dave Pybus - Religion for me is a bit of a strange thing. I mean to observe, essentially, I'm an atheist, I find religion to be confusing. I mean, take the 10 commandments for instance. Thou shall not kill? Yet on the news everyday there is religious people KILLING each other. I mean, if all the atheists in the world stood up to this behavior and banned religion as a whole then maybe the world would be a nicer, safer, more tolerant place to live? A little extreme I know but there you go. That's freedom of speech for ya!
------------------------------------------------------------
Question - What old album would you compare your new CD to? – Mitchell S.

Dave Pybus - We can't really compare this new record to anything we have done in the past other than we are continuing the Cradle sound and taking it further. We respect our past and are not denying what we have already done, unlike some other bands these days who seem to want to shun their history. For us, we want to carry on spreading the music.
------------------------------------------------------------
Question - I would like to know how I could get a prescription for some Nymphetamine?

Dave Pybus - So would I haha. Not that I would like to be addicted to something. Everything in moderation is good.

A long day, a lotta film...and the shoot for the upcoming Cradle of Filth "Nymphetamine" video is complete.

Shot yesterday (8/12) in the UK, crew were on site by 7:30am, and there 'til the last take at 2am. The band also had an early start, driving into London for the shoot from Ipswich, and finally arriving home around 4am this morning. Bassist Dave - somehow - has since hauled himself out of bed to send forth this quick note about yesterday's shoot:

"The video shoot for 'Nymphetamine' went great. Had a very early start at 7am, obviously with a hangover, and spent 14 hours holed up in a damp underground vault near the London Dungeon. Pretty grim stuff. The director, Dani Jacobs, and his crew were brilliant and worked flat out all day filming lots of different scenes with Dani, the band, Liv Kristine and our 2 very beautiful actresses. I can't wait to see the finished version. Hope they get to include what will be the first windmill headbanging in a metal ballad, haha!!! Liv was amazing and I wanna thank her for being so cool."

Check back next week for shots from the shoot.

New Album News: DESTINED TO BE A CLASSIC

(taken from the Roadrunner Records site)

Cradle Of Filth's debut release for Roadrunner Records - titled Nymphetamine, currently set for a late September release - is getting ever close to completion. Though a sit down with the band's A&R Rep here at Roadrunner, Mike Gitter, we get a few more details on the project.

As of this coming Sunday night (6/20), after all your sweet family BBQs for the weekend have wrapped up and you're dreaming of sweet nothings, Colin Richardson and Dan Turner (engineer since the beginning of this sordid affair) will have over half the record mixed. Not an easy feat, either, given that there is upwards of 100 tracks or more per song. A big sounding record, to say the least. Mixing should be fully complete come first week in July.

"I would have to say without a doubt, it's Cradle Of Filth's best record," tells Mike Gitter. "Not merely a great COF record, but a great metal record. Both longtime fans and casual listeners will be pretty fuckin' surprised." We assure you Mike's convictions are spoken with the utmost objectivity.

And, might we add, there will be a track called "Gilded Cunt" on the album. This is destined to be a classic.

I sit here, listening to "Desire In Violent Overture" coincidentally, and wonder, how did you discover Cradle? Whats your favorite album? Have you seen them live? The usual fanboy stuff comes to mind....

And believe me, having stood in the cold in Philadelphia last month, waiting for them to emerge after the show to sign, of all things, a roll of toilet paper (long story), "fanboy" is what I am....
